It is an acute progressive superficial skin affection of piglets characterized by generalized seborrheic dermatitis. The disease is often fatal in nature.
Aetiology
The disease is caused by Streptococcus hyos.
Clinical Findings
The per acute form of the disease often leads to death in piglets in 24-48 hours. The acute form is characterized by erythema, focal erosion of stratum corneum, greasy yellow brown exudation and scab formation. Lesions are located in the periocular surfaces, behind the ears on the abdomen. In the sub-acute form the exudates dry up resulting to formation of brown scales. The chronic form shows wrinkling of the skin with fissure and cracking.
Diagnosis

- Histopathological examination to know the cutaneous changes.
Treatment
- Parenteral administration of broad spectrum antibiotic is suggested.
- Local dressing is to be done with topical antibiotic or antiseptic solution
- Hydrocortisone ointment may be necessary in some cases.
